Sustainable Livelihoods

We support sustainable livelihood opportunities that lift families out of poverty, empower women and youth, and improve health and education – all while protecting nature.

In parts of Africa where limited economic opportunities exist, people are more likely to take part in environmentally harmful activities like charcoaling and bushmeat poaching. Expanding access to financial resources and training in rural communities is essential for habitat conservation and coexisting with wildlife.

How We Support Sustainable Livelihoods

Empower Communities to Benefit from Conservation

In landscapes rich with natural resources, we provide opportunities for communities to benefit from sustainable wildlife tourism, conservation projects and activities, and employment at our field-based headquarters, the Noloholo Environmental Center.

Support Women through Nature-Friendly Enterprise

Our gender-based programs like the Women’s Beekeeping Initiative set rural women up for success on the road to financial independence – uplifting their families and communities along the way.

Create Food Security and Income Stability

In rural Tanzania where many families raise livestock as a way of life, we mobilize communities to monitor and manage vital grasslands that benefit both wild and domestic animals.

Prepare Youth for Sustainable Futures

We empower the next generation to benefit from nature over the long term through education, capacity building, and conservation awareness.

I was able to sell my honey and send my children to school, and I paid for health insurance. In the past, I would sit in the shade of my hut waiting for my husband to provide. But now, I no longer have to wait on him.
